I need to buy an external Firewire drive for a video editing project. I am trying to stay around $200 and I found the LaCie 80G for $220 and the Other World Mercury Elite for $210, both from OWC.
Requirements are:
- cost (around $200)
- speed (for video)
- quietness
I would love to get higher capacity but the cost has to say at this level.
I read positive comments on both units on this forum and wanted to see if there were and preferences for either one or maybe even another choice?

I vote for the LaCie, I have the 120gig version and its fast, silent and comes in a very nice case.
Not sure about OWC, I checked their ratings on resellerratings.com and was surprised how many negative reviews there were.

My vote is also for LaCie. I've been a big fan of theirs for years. I've also had some very bad buying experiences from OWC and avoid them like the plague.

Most reviews I have read seem to indicate that people are very happy with the OWC Mercury Elite drives.
The only negative comments seem to come from some instances of shipping problems or service deficiencies.
Would this assessment be correct?

I have a Mercury Elite 80 GB from OWC and have been very happy with it. I've also purchased other stuff from them over the years and haven't had a problem as yet.

Why not make your own? You can get a firewire case for $50 or so and a 3.5" drive for about $100 or so. And you can easily swap out the drive when the 80 gets full....

I just plugged in the same drive 20 minutes ago. I immediately erased it with Apple's Disk Utility and lost 5GB!!! What happened? 121GB is now 114.99GB. I'm looking on the LaCie web site... but if you know what is going on here... I'd appreciate an answer. Otherwise, cool drive, cool case.

Thats normal, once formatted no hard drive is the same size, if I remember correctly 115gb. was the same size I had after formatting.

Another vote for the LaCie. I have the 120GB version and it has run very quietly and reliably. I like their stuff - also have a CD-RW from them that works well.

I have a LaCie CD-RW and it is NOISY. I don't mind it because I only have it powered on when I'm using it. I don't know what their hard drives are like, just letting you know the CD-RW drives are noisy.

I also would highly recommend the LaCie Drive. I purchased a one from the Apple Store and it has been flawless. I use it for a backup drive. It's quiet and as was previously mentioned, it comes in an attractive, space age looking case.
