Hi all,

I'm a very happy birthday boy today. My wife is away in New Zealand, but this morning a 10Gb ipod arrived with a birthday card. Love that girl.

I'm sitting here with a very big grin, listening to lots of tunes, but have a question.

Next spring, I'm going to Nepal for 2 months, and would like to know if it would be possible to use an ipod car charger lead to charge the internal battery from a pack of D-cells (or AA's) matched to give 12v.

Anyone who's more technically minded care to tell me if I can do this, as half of my trip will be to areas without mains power and I'd just love to take a load of music with me.

Cheers,

J.

Try enjoying Nepal without your iPod. I am sure you can handle life without your toys for 2 measly months, especially technologies that serve to separate individuals from others around them. You will miss many once-in-a-lifetime experiences whilst you are hooked-up to your iPod.

That said, if you really need your iPod, try looking into solar arrays like this one to recharge your iPod. Nepal's altitude makes it ideal for solar power. Granted, solar cells don't give much power (you wont be able to play using it as a power source), but it shoud be able to recharge the internal battery in a few hours... And you wont have to ruin Nepal with your discarded D-cells.

Yes it is possible to run your iPod from external AA batteries. You will have to build the thing from scratch. Info and instructions here.

Yes, I thought hard about this. However, I will be trekking on my own for a month. I will be up in the mountains and I'm sure there will be times when I'm on my own slogging up a mountain and some tunes would be helpful.

I don't plan to listen to it exclusively, but it would be nice to have the option to have a bit of music.

thanks for the other option, I'll check it out.

cheers,

J.
