I've never seen anything like it. Friend of mine bought a brand new external firewire drive from Transintl, one of the clear case/travelstar drive ones.

So we pull it out of the box, attach the included firewire cable and plug into his tower.

It's plugged in for 5-10 seconds, when a red light suddenly comes on in the front of the drive and then a fairly loud pop, the case fills with smoke, and some sort of liquid...and is of course fried beyond beief.

Needless to say it's going back to Transintl. But has anyone seen anything like this before??

yea, that's a capacitor (or should I say WAS ?) just don't drink the fluid, you won't appreciate it

oh quick capture that smoke and liquid and just put it back in the box, and tape it up so nothing leaks out, and you should be good to go.


did some one say thank gawd for a warenty. BTW i would snaped off tons of pics of that sounds like fun, except for that whole burning, broken hard drive thing.

Um, take pictures go to the doctor and get a neckbrace and sue them for everything they got!
