From a reply to one of my posts pertaining to a monitor I got questions regarding power management, so i'm starting a new thread.

Background Information
My current power management infrastructure:
  • American Power Conversion (APC) Smart-UPS 1000
  • APC SmartSlot Web/SNMP Management Card
  • APC Smart-Slot Expansion Chassis
  • APC SmartSlot Environmental Monitoring Card
  • APC Ethernet Multi-Port Surge Supressor
  • APC PowerView LCD Display

What you really need for Smart-UPS network management
You need one of the web management cards from APC, there are now a few different ones, but the normal one people have is the AP9606 and slides into your Smart-UPS' SmartSlot slot. If you don't know if you have one, check the back, there should be a small backplate there. Keep in mind this does not work with the Smart-UPS V/S devices. They normally cost a couple hundred bucks, but check eBay. I got nearly all my APC equipment that way for much less than retail.

This device can trigger an email to you or with APC Tracker software (http://www.apctracker.com/) you can have it shut down computers across the network. Additionally, you can add environmental monitoring, like I did to have a full monitoring system. I believe there is a single card now that can do this.

To view some of the web accessible packages, check out the following site, you can control some there: http://testdrive.apcc.com/

The APC PowerView unit mentioned allows you to control your Smart-UPS from a handheld display under a menu driven interface. If you don't want a card, but want some control over your UPS, it may be a good choice, as the software for this configuration is not available for Macs.

I'm happy to provide more specific detail as well.
