I have a 22 inch Cinema Display and a quicksilver G4, and OS X 10.2.2.

when I log out, I can still see the vertical or horizontal lines from my desktop picture on top of that blue image on the login screen. I can also see an afterimage when I zoom in until the black of the pointer fills the screen.

Sounds like burn-in. That's why you need screen savers and/or setting the prefs to turn off the screen after a period of time.

However, unlike CRTs, this is supposedly correctable with LCD displays.

Don't use a screen saver with an LCD display, it shortens the life of the backlight.

Set your monitor to turn off after 10-15 minutes of non usage.
