My mom wants to buy a new printer for her college classes. She and I also want to print digital photos that look like 35mm photos taken from a regular camera. I've helped her narrow it down to a Canon S900 and HP Photosmart 7550. We both like all of the bells and whistles that the HP has but it prints somewhat slow. Does anyone have personal experience, good or bad, with either of these printers? Also, can anyone comment on Canon's and/or HP's OS 10.2 drivers? Thanks alot!

I own the HP 5550 which has a speed rating similar to the 7550. The reason I bought the 5550 was that I prefer to download my pictures into my machine and clean them up before I print. The photo quality of the six color printing is fabulous, but then again I am sure that the Cannon printer works just fine.

Keep in mind that the rated speed of all printers is based upon five percent coverage of the page with text. That is about the coverage of a basic office memo. Also the maximum speed of these printers is measured using draft mode. Which should be more than sufficient for most people.

The Cannon printer will print pictures faster than the HP. However, the HP will produce better text and photo longevity (65 years vs 25 years).

I suppose that they could have changed things since I looked at Canon printers, but they've been awful in the past. Try the HP on draft, it will even look ok and it is REALLY much faster.

The enhanced reliability and the true black of HPs are what makes it clear to me.

There is a reason that Apple switched to HP from Canon for their last series of StyleWriters....

I use the canon s900. My wife does photo's with it. You must use canon paper to get the best results. The drivers work great so far with mac os 10.2 and 9. The driver is poor for 10.1 through 10.15. We network on the printer with my wife's ibook and so far it has been wonderful.
Hope this helps
thanks
