Hey!
I'd like to have an external dvd drive (just dvd, not combo, not dvd-r) to watch DVDs and to use data DVDs. So what I found at an Apple dealer was a firewire case for cd/dvd drives and HDs. It's pretty cheap and using the Oxford chipset.
The next thing I'd need is and internal DVD drive which i find in every store for about 50 bucks. My question is which do work with Mac OS X? Could problems appear regarding the DVD Player App?
Cheers, Thilo

I have four noname brand Firewire cases, three of which are Oxford 911, and one of which I think is Indigita. Three are for 5.25" drives, and one is only for 3.5" hard drives.
I have tried several hard drives, 2 DVD-ROM drives, 1 DVD-RAM/-R drive, and 1 CD-RW with the Firewire cases, in various combinations. ALL of them work fine in OS X with no drivers.
YMMV.

Can I assume though that the DVD-RAM/-R drive does NOT work with iDVD though?

The DVD-RAM/-R drive should NOT work with iDVD, but actually I haven't tried.
I only got iDVD recently, but I've got a SuperDrive in my TiBook so I'll just use it.
The DVD-RAM/-R drive works fine in Toast, both for DVD-RAM and DVD-R. Also, DVD-RAM is natively supported OS X simply with the Finder's drag and drop.

The DVD Player app won't start unless you have an internal DVD-ROM drive. However, you can get around this by mounting a Toast disk image of a DVD first. DVD Player will think you have an internal drive for some reason. I use a very small image with no video that I made in DVD Studio Pro for this purpose.
