What do you think the chances of an Airport update in the near future are? I was noticing Linksys now offers units that run at 5Ghz and units that run at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz simultaneously providing dual band capabilities on the same unit. The indoor reception distance is said to be up to 328 feet where Airport is 150 feet. Looks like the encryption is higher too at 152 bit compared to Airport's 128 bit. I can't remember how old the snow version is at the moment but it seems it should be time to update it.

I bet the Linksys cr@p is 802.11a. 152bit encryption? Is that a standard (802.11x)? I doubt it. Personally, I put money on Apple going with 802.11g. I haven't been keeping up on whether the .11g standard has been finalized. The only product I know that's 802.11b to 11g upgradeable is the Cisco 350.

Here's the link:

Linksys AP

It gives the specs. It's both .11a and 11b on the same access point. I had one of the graphite base station and one of the linksys wireless gateways a year ago. I was able to get much better reception from the linksys gateway. I dunno I would just really like to see an update to the distance factor considering the Tibooks still have issues. I would hope if an updated ABS could give say 300 ft instead of 150 maybe the Tibook would work 100 ft away instead of only 50.

I read the Linksys has very good 802.11b range (relatively to Apple ABS) due to its dipole antenae design. On the other hand, 802.11a is generally perceived as [very] poor in reception range. I remeber there's a review about first to market 802.11a access points (may include Linksys) with very very small coverage. I'd wait until at least after MWSF where I too suspect Apple will announce its wireless direction: 802.11a or 802.11g.
