Can anyone give me any recommendations for a cheap scanner for OS X? Do some brands have better drivers than others? How does Image Capture work? Any advice would be appreciated. Oh - and what OCR options are there for OSX?

Image Capture is so-so with most scanners. I have an Epson Perfection 1650 and its software is far better than Image Capture. However typically I just use the TWAIN driver and scan right into Photoshop or whatever other program I'm using.

My wife gave me an Epson Perfection 1250 Photo scanner for Christmas (my old scanner died). Price was under $85. It works great for scanning into any application that is Twain compliant. Image quality is excellent. It also scans film negatives and slides with the included attachments. The only downside is that the software must be downloaded from the Epson Web site and the front panel scan buttons don't do anything on a Mac, but I wolud never use them anyway. I scan everything into Photoshop or GraphicConverter.

It ain't pretty but it works cheap!!!

Yeah, what's up with that? I know that Apple's software supports this. I wonder why Epson didn't implement it. While it isn't *that* big a deal, it would make things a little faster. You could effectively treat your scanner like a photocopier. If there were good hooks to a OCR package then it would really rock.
