Most probably. You're upgrading your graphics chip and doubling the memory...I'd say you should notice a framerate improvement in newer games.

Another good resource for such comparisons is www.tomshardware.com. Not Mac-specific, but the relative benchmarks on those cards should be useful.
If you already have the Radeon 8500, I'm not sure the $400 for the GeForce 4Ti is worth your money. There aren't any games on the market that can take advantage of it's unique capabilities, and under OS X it uses the GeForce 3 drivers.
I have one mind you, but for me it was an upgrade from a 2MX. Big difference. Not sure if you'll see the same sort of improvement.

lol 400 bucks, lol. No I plan to spend no more that 150 total, time to pull in some favors with my apple buddies I am looking to increase my gaming stuff, but i also use PS7 and maya on a daily basis, and thos all seem to be faster than my 8500.

Well, that's a different story.
One potential benefit of the 4Ti over the 8500 is that it has both an ADC and DVI port, while the 8500 has just the DVI port and (presumably) a VGA connector too.
It's definitely an amazing card. With my old gfx card, I use to be able to run Star Trek Elite Force at 1024 x 768 with medium detail, and Medal of Honor at the same resolution with minimal detail. Now I run them both at max detail at 1280x1024. Same goes with Jedi Knight II.

I have it in a G4/867 (single processor), 640 MB of RAM. I suspect that the CPU is the limiting factor in my system now.
Regarding the Radeon 9700: the retail version of the 9000 isn't even available yet, so who knows when a 9700 might appear. Vaporware for now.

Right now I'm plyaing JKII the most. The multiplayer game can take advantage of your second CPU, so I'd anticipate you'd see better performance on that with the GeForce 4Ti card than I do. On my machine it's amazing at 1280x1024.
To a lesser extent I've played Medal of Honor, Star Trek Elite Force, and the RTCW demo. All run extremely well with the 4Ti card. It's like night and day compared to my old GeForce 2MX, which I suppose should be no surprise. Over the weekend I tried the X-Plane demo, which was smooth as silk at 1280x1024. Alas, it's not a combat simulator so flying around became rather boring after a while, even on Mars.

Looks like the Radeon 9000 is now available for retail, according to a macnn story today!
Take a look at www.insidemacgames.com; they just did a comparison of the GeForce 4Ti to the Radeon 9000. While the GeForce is faster across the board, the Radeon may well be a more cost-effective solution. Of course, if one can get a GeForce on the cheap, that's a different story.
