I am thinking getting a cheap 10/100 PCI Ethernet card for my old StarMax. I would like to know is it possible to get a 10/100 PCI ethernet card packaged for a PC (without stating it can used on a Mac on the package) and use it on a Mac?

Most PC ethernet cards absolutly will NOT work with a Mac. Don't waste your time or money. The main problem is no drivers for Mac for the various chipsets used in PC ethernet cards.

Try the D-Link 530TX+. It's pretty much exactly what you are looking for- a very inexpensive 10/100 card (can be had from $10-$15)and it has Mac drivers.

I've used nothing but this model card in any number of Macs, including a StarMax 2000 with no problems. The drivers have always been excellent, even in the days when D-Link didn't themselves advertise that the card was Mac compatible and one had to get drivers from Realtek.

But nowdays D-Link has Mac drivers right on their site for OS 8 thru X. Curiously enough though, when you see this card packaged, it does not mention Mac support on the outer box or packaging.

Shop around, you can find a good price on this card around the net. Make sure it's the exact model (530TX+). Even where it's sold and not advertised as Mac compatible, as long as it's the same model it is.

I did a price compare on this card here.

Do you need to install drivers to get it worked? If so, what drivers did you use?

I have an 8500 that I am configuring as a server. Does anyone have experience with the SIIG USB2/Firewire/10-100BT PCI card?

You can buy any PCI ethernet card with the Realtek 8139 chipset. Realtek (www.realtek.com.tw) has drivers for both OS 9 and OS X on their downloads page. I've used 6 of these on different Macs and I've had no problems. Very cheap too.

Under OS X? I tried using a 3com card, brand new 3c905 with no luck in 10.2. Couldn't find any drivers either. A shame because 3com makes a solid network card.

I can vouch for this.

Note that many cheap Mac ethernet cards are simply generic Realtek 8139-based ones with rebranded drivers.

I have finally bought a D-Link 530TX+ Ethernet card today. I have installed it on my old StarMax, but it doesn't work

I installed the latest driver from the D-Link website, and I have noticed from my switch panel that it is connected with duplex as well as 100Mbps is on, and I ran the Apple System Profiler, and it recognise the as "Ethernet card" when the extension driver is on, and recognised as a "Ethernet card" when the extension is off with Extension Manager.

Furthermore, both the AppleTalk and TCP/IP control panel does show the "Ethernet" option, but I cannot do any connection from my StarMax to any other Macs on the Ethernet or my AirPort base stations...

What have a done wrong??? Have I bought a lemon???

Tried again, but I put into another PCI slot, and this time it works!

I have to say the D-Link website docuemntation aren't all that helpful.
