I need one and I'm hoping for feedback to help me narrow down my options. I've maxed out my internal bays with 3 Seagate 80 GB drives (thanks to Sonnet) but my DV needs more space. So...

On the one hand, there is the possibility of buying more internal drives and putting them into FireWire enclosures. This certainly seems like an affordable solution, but what I'm extremely weary of is the quality of the Firewire interface. I'm not doing DV only for fun, it's my livelihood. So I'm looking for feedback from someone who has married an internal drive to an enclosure and is happy with the performance and reliability they get using this drive intensively with FCP on OS X.

On the other hand, if the above is really pie-in-the-sky, what is the best performing/most reliable 120 GB-200 GB 7200 RPM external firewire hard drive for the above stated purpose?

Very appreciative of any help (insights from your experience, urls to good web sites dealing with these questions) anyone out there can give. Thanks in advance!

Well, I have 3 120GB LaCie D2s, and love-em. Retail they're like $260.

I do use them with FCP, but I wouldn't say "intensely". I have a SCSI raid for day to day use, so the firewire drives are more for online backup.

I've tweaked some pretty complex FCP projects where everything was on the D2s though, and haven't had any problems.

So far...

You also might get some more feedback on the "Digital A/V" forum.
