I am trying to find a USB to serial adaptor for my iBook that can be used to console into routers, smart switches etc. Has anyone had any experience with any and if so what software did you use?

Must be compatible with OS X 10.2.x.
Cheers,
SweetsDream

I was just recently lookin into the same thing, in other to hook up my 8 pin serial midi box to my mac through usb. Unfortunately, everthing I found was more expensive than just to get a new midi usb I remember finding a few things on www.blackbox.com but they were around $80, good luck.

actually, the deal just got a little more interesting. Here are 3 belkin products that might work:

I started looking again because there is currently a 50% off coupon code going on right now because of macworld. I'm not gonna post it here, but you should be able to find it by looking around online (hint: www.fatwallet.com)

I use a Keyspan Twin Serial Adapter in combination with ZTerm.

I've used this since OS X 10.0.

I've been using the Keyspan USB PDA Adapter:

http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/pdaadapter/

The adapter works well under 10.2.x. So far I have had no problems connecting to
the serial console of switches, routers and servers.

For terminal emulation software, I use Zterm. You can get the latest version here:

Keyspan definately makes some very popular serial ports, and I believe they work with OS X. I didn't know Belkin made any. Interesting.

For "mission critical" stuff, many people prefer the internal Stealth serial port. Although I've been hearing that they have trouble with the MDDs now .

Eventually I'd like to have a nice video deck with serial control for FCP. Firewire just isn't accurate enough at a certain level.

Best of luck.

Has anybody found out if the Belkin USB to serial hub will work with switch configuration? Also, do you need a special terminal application or can you use the terminal application that comes with OS X?

I use the IO Gear adapter with Mini Com. You can get Mini Com from Fink.

Just received a Sewell USB to Serial adapter ($17 plus shipping) today. I downloaded and installed their drivers as well as a copy of ZTerm. Once I got ZTerm configured properly I was able to configure my Dell Network switch. I haven't as of yet found any incompatibilities.
