Just a heads up for you guys...

I just got my 2.5" laptop drive Firewire case from www.compgeeks.com for US$44. It has one Firewire port and one USB 2 port. It comes with all the cables, including a separate PS2 DC power adapter for those USB PC types without enough power.

The silver colour is very similar to my TiBook and it seems very sturdy. It's also very small, at only 5.3 inches long and 3.1 inches wide. It is noticeably thinner than the TiBook, but can house a 12.5 mm drive.

Unfortunately, I can't yet test it, because I have not yet received my 60 GB drive to put in it. I have been told though that the Firewire works fine. Chip is Oxford 911. (I don't know anyone who has tried the USB 2.0 function yet, but who cares? )

Fortunately, mine doesn't have "USB 2.0" stamped on it. It comes with the silver side panels you see in the picture, as well as an extra set of blue side panels.

I bought because it supports Firewire.

However, it does indeed support USB 2 as well. (USB 2.0 looks just like USB 1.1, and is backwards compatible.)

I was looking at a different drive enclosure.. I didn't see them in two different groups..good deal... I wonder if the prices are dropping because of firewire2 being out?

It's been that cheap for along time. (Compgeeks is a discount store.) In fact, the one that supports only Firewire was even cheaper until they sold out.

1 firewire port? That makes it rather hard to daisy chain and with one firewire port on most laptops its not very convenient. What is that case made of plastic or metal? And does it have an aluminum frame?

I have a Firewire hub.

I asked about the Firewire-only version when it was still available, and it apparently only has 1 port too, although I've seen pix of a 2-port version available. Unfortunately, these enclosures at other stores cost almost twice as much, so I suspect the only way to get the 2-port version is to pay $80.

It's only plastic. Transparent on the outside, and silver on the inside. On a good note though, it's super light and it's more sturdy than other plastic Firewire enclosures I've seen.

I went 60 GB 4200 rpm laptop drive shopping today. Couldn't find one. I'm tempted to just order one from the US.

Forgot to mention that it comes with a carrying case too. Zippered vinyl nylon with strap. It's just big enough to house the drive and all the cables. Nothing special, but not bad for a $44 enclosure.

Here are the pix. I just threw in the mouse to give you an idea of the size:

Hopefully I should get my drive very soon for testing.
