I have a G4 400 and am wondering if there is any way I can get a Superdrive for it and use iDVD, or is buying a new mac the only way to do this?

just get a pioneer DVR-A05, and put it in your G4, replacing the stock drive. should work perfectly with iDVD.

i put an A03 in my G4 450, and it works great:iTunes support, discburner support, toast, iDVD, DVDSP, etc.

yeah, $49 is pretty reasonable. sure, i can download the other apps for free, but i can just get iLife, keep the iDVD3 disc, and give the other junk to my sister (who only has dialup, so it's a pain in the ass for her to download the iApps).

Replace the internal drive with a DVD burner? I've heard that it can't cause the machine is not fast enough to feed the burner. But anyway, I want a definite answer from you mac pros.

I also have a TiBook, but I doubt there is anyway to replace the internal drive in that. Even if I get an external drive, what software could I use. Does DVD studio support other drives?

nah, you can do it. i did it, and i have a G4 450. works fine. sure, encoding to mpeg2 in iDVD is slower, but the DVD burns fine. it's really sweet, just take out the old one, put in the superdrive, and it's like it was drive from the factory, fully compatible.

ah-ha!!! don't be so sure! check this page out,

http://store.powerbook1.com/

a superdrive for your tibook coming on feb 25th.

DVDSP supports external drives, basically most of the DVD writers that are out there.

i'd say, save your money, and wait for an internal from MCE.
(and, they are coming out with a CDRW/DVD combo for slot load iMacs...i can finally upgrade my mom's iMac! and what fun smilies!)

AWESOME! I'll save this forum posting for future reference. Thanks for the info. Knowledge is power! (Yeah, that sounds corny, but it is and I'm happy.)

Ok...will that aforementioned DVD burner that works with iDVD fit into the eMac? I have a burning desire to upgrade my first-gen model with the CD burner in it.

It has been said that while the UJ-815 upgrade will work on newer TiBooks (eg. 667 DVI and later I think), the drive may not fit in older TiBooks.

so, basically, is MCE false advertising? as it is stated on that superdrive pic:

"SuperDrive update for ALL PowerBook G4-$449"

we don't really know what drive they are using, so i guess we'll have to wait and see.

Alright, managed to figure out my questions by myself, and thought others might be interested. First this info is from user posts at xlr8yourmac, so don't blame me if it don't work. The Cendyne model#CDICD00106 has the same mechanism as the Pioneer DVR-A04, and thats what Apple System Profiler recognises. The Cendyne #CDICD00209 has the same mechanism as the Pioneer DVR-A05.

Officemax and Staples both have (had) specials, and now seem to be out of stock, so check local to get one of these drives for under $200.

For those Cendyne drives at Staples, which are the drives? They have two with DVD-R/RW but they are $299.98 and #249.94. The cheaper drives all are read only or are missing features. Checking Froogle, every place else has nearly the same prices.

I put a Pioneer 104 in my G4/500 AGP - without a hitch, instant recognition from iTunes, iDVD, burning from the finder, etc.

Needed to buy iDVD at that time for $20 - now I just forked another $49 at iLife...eh, its cool, these are incredible apps.

Checkout today's DealMac listing: $160 for a SuperDrive!!!

"CenDyne/Pioneer DVR-105 for $160 after rebate (updated) 9:27 am
Staples.com has the Cendyne DVD-R/DVD-RW/CD-R EIDE drive (a Pioneer DVR-105), model no. CDICD00209, for $249.94. A $50 mail-in rebate and $40 coupon trim the net price to $159.94, the best we've seen for a 4x DVD burner. Shipping is free. Rebate ends February 1, 2003. Update: It has since sold out."

Don't pay attention to that last sentence. I was able to add the drive to my shopping cart without any problems. I just don't have enough money right now to checkout.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

Doesn't Formac make a "devideon" DVD burner for FireWire? (I'm sure you can get the FireWire ports if you have an xtra PCI)

The Formac one won't work with iDVD though, will it?

BTW - DVD Studio works with everything, right? And will the Finder properly burn DVDs?
