I phoned Apple customer care here in the UK to ask if my battery is defective and therefore covered by warranty.

The problem was: if left to play continually it WOULD give 10 hours, but as I use it everyday for the train journey to work and back (30 mins each way), and was switching it completely off in between, the battery would be flat after 4 hours (max) of use. Also if fully charged on a Friday, by Monday it would be flat even if not used.

Additonally it was getting hot when plugged into my G4 733, but not when using the mains adapter.

The tech support/customer care said no that was not normal, arranged a courier to collect it within the next 48 hours and it will be returned in 5 to 10 days when repaired.

Looking forward now to having better battery life!

EXACTLY the same problem I was having with mine. I returned it after 364 days, they checked it out, and gave me a brand new 5 gigger :-D

Yep first generation too, give apple a call and see what they say, you mightbe lucky if your warranty is gone as it is poor performance.

You can only try!

Is this the best strategy if one purchased an iPod via Apple's online store?(Compusa purchasers have that TAP program)

Perhaps 1 day before the warranty is up is a bit close, but sounds like a good way to continually upgrade one's iPod. Who knows, by this time next year the 5 gigger won't be available so they'll have to give me a 10 gigger!

Heh.

I was told at the time of exchange that my "new" warranty would be 90 days from date of exchange or 1 year from purchase of the original iPod... whichever was later. So obviously the former is later for me, by 89 days or so. So your plan won't work.

I also asked about paying extra and trading up to a larger iPod. I was told this wasn't possible, because they had special exchange stock which was used in 1:1 trades for warrantied pieces. It made sense as he brought it out and it was in a different box -- just the iPod only (no fancy box, no headphones, nothin'). They obviously have a few brand new ones sitting in brown boxes in the back for exchanges.
