Ok, I've got a question for anyone who's seen a Radeon 8500 in action under Mac OS X 10.2.3: Do you see "Detect Displays" in the Displays control panel? I don't, and I can't tell if I should or not.

Here's my setup:
Copmuter 1: B&W G3 (w/Sonnet G4/500 upg.), Radeon 7000 PCI card, OSX 10.2.3
Computer 2: AGP G4 DP 450, Radeon 8500 AGP, OSX 10.2.3
(Both video cards have been flashed up to the latest firmware as on ATI's site.)

On the first computer, I see "Detect Displays". On the second computer, I don't. I think I should...

Any ideas?

Ihave a 8500 in a QS 800 driving two monitors.

I don't have a "Detect Displays" in the control panel in the System Preferences, but I do have a "Detect Displays" in the Display pull down on the menu bar.

HTH.

Yeah, that helps. In the drop down menu, all I see is "Open Displays..." I was hoping that others had my same problem, but I guess I'm the one with the issue here.

Do you think a fresh reinstall of the system software will help?

I can't say if a reinstall will help. Maybe, maybe not. Are you using the ATI October drivers or the 10.2.3 drivers? Quartz Extreme wouldn't work with the ATI October drivers, so there might be more problems with the ATI drivers and 10.2.3.

The "Detech Displays" in the menu bar comes and goes seemingly at random, so you try might a restart. It wasn't there before my last restart, but it's there after the last restart.

i'm running the latest ATI drivers (the october one) on my 8500 in 10.2.3 (G4 450 Sawtooth), and QE is running fine; i checked it using this QE check app:

http://www.entropy.ch/software/macos...tzextremecheck

as for the 'detect displays', i've never seen that in my displays sys prefs, or in the displays pulldown. all i get is 'open displays...' in the pulldown.

that's odd. I just got my 8500 last week, and installed the Oct drivers. I checked QE with the Quartz Extreme Check, and it said it was not accelerated. I reinstalled the 10.2.3 Radeon drivers, and then the displays were accelerated.

oh well. It works, that's all I care about.

Hmmm... maybe it's not just me after all. I did another fresh reinstall of everything, reseated the card and all, and I still don't see "Detect Displays".

Ah well, both displays are Quartz Extreme enhanced, so I suppose all is well, but why do I have this nagging feeling that something somewhere is amiss?

OK, I did some looking around, and Bruno from ATI seems to think that "Detect Displays" should be showing up using a Radeon 8500. He said so in this thread over at xlr8yourmac.

I'm determined to get to the bottom of this. This *should work*... why doesn't it?!
