I'm looking for suggestions for a large external Firewire HD that plays nice with OSX. I have an older Maxtor that sometimes mounts and sometimes doesn't.

Try the new LaCie d2 FireWire hard drives, they actually go up to 500 GB (but are two 250 GB HD's together), they look great and simply work great.

Wait till February, Maxtor will announce a new top model: 320 GB @ 5400 rpm (no joke!). ?Smaller' harddrives will also be made available, starting at 200 GB, 270 GB, 320 GB. I will wait till then ...
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Avoid Maxtor drives. I am on my third one replaced, the dual beep of death syndrome. Granted, they replaced the drive no questions asked, but...this is getting to be a pain. Just this morning, my replacement drive failed to mount, and I got the two beeps...a bad sign.

Wiebetech makes some nice external units:

Their upgrades and support are very good also.
