The only name brand Firewire device I have is a $50 Lexar Firewire Compact Flash reader.
Everything else I have uses noname generic cases. I have a Teac 24X CD-RW, a Panasonic DVD burner, an ancient Quantum 3 GB 5400 rpm hd, and a Western Digital 120 GB drive, all in generic cases. They all work fine together, and when I've swapped drives around they all still worked fine, both with my Mac and my PC. My biggest problem is that one of the cases has a fan that rattles.
I figure as long as you stay with Oxford 911 or Initio or whatever for the chipset, and stay with a name brand good quality drive, then you're fine and you'll save a lot of money over a Lacie. (Note that Initio is slower than Oxford 911, but for optical drives it's irrelevant.)

The LaCie d2 52x24x52 drive is probably the best - it has the best styling and is only $199, and I believe works great with Disc Burner in the Finder, iTunes 3, and Toast.
MacWorld had a review of it and gave it the best review out of about 4 different extrernal CD-RW drives in the last issue (or the one before that).
So, I would go with the LaCie.
