Anyway to enhance sound from IMAC 17 to emulate surround sound...using maybe Sonica. Currently have good anlog speakers with subwoofer but how could I connect to IMAC?

Or would Apple Pro speakers and adding subwoofer be sufficient?

You can get the Apple Pro Speakers and iSub 2000 for $59 each and that would be "OK".

Or if you are into audio, DVD's and good sound, you can get the new Sonica Theatre which is an external 7.1 sound card powered by USB for the iMac. It is $99 street. And then get something such as the Logitech Z-680 5.1 system or the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1. They are both $399.00, but the Logitech set comes with a ProLogic II decoder and a remote.

If you want to use the speakers you currently have with that subwoofer you mentioned, you may need to pick up some hardware.

You can take the sound output from the iMac (either from the line-out or from Sonica) and run it into a receiver. You can hook up your speakers and sub to this receiver (provided they are 'real', and not computer speakers) and voila, you'll have good, clean amplified sound from your iMac.

I believe that hooking up a desktop computer to a sound system is the clearest route to good sound quality.

Or, a good pair of headphones could also suffice. I'm a fan of Koss Porta Pro's myself.

Check out Griffin Tech's breakout cables. I just got mine and now have some serious sound coming out of my Mac. It works on the new iMacs and my older G4 Liquid Audio. If you can spare $25 I think you'll love it.
