I earlier posted that I bought this case for my external laptop drive.

Well, it blew up today.

Luckily the drive still works.

It was the "stuffing" of that component.

Xbench is evil...

I had just finished initializing the drive and was running Xbench just for the hell of it. That's when I hear the KABLAM!

The funny thing was that the drive still seemed to be running fine afterwards even while still in that case.

Hmmm... Others are saying it's likely just a reversed capacitor, and thus a manufacturing defect with this unit only, not a design defect. Ie. just my bad luck.

I wonder if I should get another one, as the store has obviously offered a replacement...

depends on the cap and whats its uesed for, many are polorized so that would explain the explosion.

also it might be just a bad cap, that would explain why it took such a short time to "pop"

Take 2. I've ordered one of these:

Comes with power adapter if required but it too is bus powered. Has one 6-pin port, one 4-pin port (with no power obviously), and only is good for 9.5 mm drives.

I must say www.fwdepot.com has very fast order processing. I ordered online and within an hour I had a UPS tracking number.

Hopefully it works out better. Fortunately www.CompGeeks.com says they'll just refund the $ for the other enclosure on my credit card. They usually offer store credits it seems, but this is an unusual "case".

OK, got my new Firewire case. Hopefully this one will be better.

There are no power ratings on the unit itself, but there is "5V" on the box, and "5V 1.3A" on the AC adapter. Hopefully, that latter rating on the adapter is indicative of the what the enclosure can handle. My drive is 5V 0.7A, which is 0.1A more than the previous enclosure had marked.

If it means anything the biggest cap on the board says 5V 35V 7uF 47uF HY 105 o (degrees) whatever that means.
