I get this error when i use the hot sync button:
Unable to initiate hotsync operation because the port is in use by another application.
Im using the USB cradle. I can't seem to figure out why I'm getting this message, because when i hit ok, it brings up the sync window, and i can just hit the sync button, and it works. hmmm..

Are you using OS 9 or OS X? You might want to look for other background processes that might be taking the port. Under OS X, Process Viewer in the Utilities folder is helpful for this.

I had the same problem when I was trying to snyc for the "FIRST" time. If that's your problem do this....instead of hitting the button tap the HotSync icon on your home screen. That'll bring up the HotSync app. Tap the icon in the middle of your screen and it should initiate a sync. Worked for me....after that first time I've been able to just hit the button. I too am using X

If you look around Apple's forums, you'll see that there are a lot of usb hotsync problems with 10.2.3. Doesnt seem to be fixed in 10.2.4. Bluetooth syncing works just fine though.

You might want to try to reinstall Palm Desktop. This usually fixes many problems that Palm users experience.

new Tungsten T and can't sync. getting the stupid "unable to initiate...blah blah blah...port in use by another application" message too. I'm feeling a tad peeved.
a) process viewer is nice to look at but there are 20 or 30 things running there and I don't have the knowledge necessary to know what most of them are or how they relate to this sync issue. any hints?
b) reinstalled palm desktop with no results
c) installed and trashed isync as I figured it was just muddying the waters.
d) I read this: http://www.palm.com/support/macintosh/portinuse.html
and disabled appletalk with no results. but with all this talk of ports, what does appletalk have to do with USB anyway? my appletalk stuff works through ethernet so I can't help but feel that this is about some older hardware.
this article also includes this: "Disable software that is dedicated to the serial (modem or printer) port you are using. This may be fax/modem software, scanner software, or other software related to devices normally plugged into either the modem or printer port." Well, I don't have any software related to these items currently running so how do I "disable" them? and all this talk of serial ports...I'm using USB, what's the story?
e)here's the apple article on this alert:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...us%7C166438142
None of this seems applicable or successful.
I am truly irritated here. How can I reset everything and start fresh? The fun of having a new toy is completely ruined.
Any help appreciated or at least a pointer in the direction of a help source!
J

oh, about starting the sync by choosing the app at Home window: I get an icon with the little phone superimposed over the hot sync. tapping it get's me a message that I have to enter a phont number. This doesn't seem right. Am I stuck in modem/phone syncing? and if so how do I get out?
sorry, I'm totally clueless about this. first palm device, first day, out of box and can't go any further.
I think I'll go look at the little "read this first" brochure again.

A few notes about Tungsten T syncing... I went through a battle getting this one to work...
- You ABSOLUTELY MUST use the version of Palm Desktop that CAME ON THE TUNGSTEN CD!!! The downloaded version WILL NOT WORK!
- Try removing every last trace of Palm Desktop and iSync and re-install the version of Desktop that came with the T|T.
- If you have the Keyboard driver on your T|T, disable it. It causes a lot of problems with syncing.
- You can try hard resetting your T|T by holding down the power button while pressing the reset button. Release the power button, then press the "up" arrow (will erase all data)

That's the wrong icon, tap on "Local" and then choose "Cradle/Cable" from the pop-up list below.

Hard reset did the trick for me. After reset I got the correct hotsync screen with cradle/cable instead of phone/modem.
I also completely removed and reinstalled all Palm stuff that I could beforehand but that wasn't sufficient.
Fortunately I had nothing on the device yet so I lost nothing.
Thank you, thank you. Now I don't have to throw my $400 toy out the window
