I saw a story online and then checked it out for myself that the 5gb iPods are no longer being sold through the Apple store.
Are they just out of stock or do you think something new is on the way?

It's the same situation at the Uk and Ireland Apple Stores. this picture and spec is there, but no buttons to select it.

If it is a stock issue then they've run out of them at source.

No, they are the original version, introduced in Oct 2001. The others followed in 2002.

The rumor sites have indicated that the price of the 5 GB model would drop, but they didn't seem to think it would be eliminated entirely. If it is gone, I hope they introduce a new one, because a lower-priced iPod would be a really good idea.

I really would love to be able to download photos from my dig camera onto it (via an adaptor) for later download into iPhoto on my iBook. This would save taking the iBook on holiday or having to buy larger CF cards.
