Has anyone ever thought about an iPod with an FM tuner? It just popped in my head.

Take a look at my recent post about the Samsung YEPP 900. It's basically an iPod with a radio tuner in it - just a lot less attractive.
You can find it on CNET or via Samsung's consumer website.

In the UK we now have DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasts). I'm not sure if DAB is out in the USA yet, as without it this would be a non starter.
Why not integrate a DAB tuner into the iPod.
This would seem a much better choice for us as far as adding radio to the iPod.
Some of the actual hardware already in the iPod could be shared (as the broadcasts use a compressed format).
We are already starting to see personal DAB units in the UK, so this will be possible with a further round of chip set / size reductions.
Battery life is also a problem with DAB sets at the moment, but lower power chips sets are on the way.
Digital music and digital radio in one unit.
Good idea ?

Could be a good idea. However, I haven't even heard of this technology until now so I doubt it will happen any time soon.

I think that will be the problem.
It's a great technology, you can read all about DAB here :-

But as this looks like a UK only service at the moment........ not much hope for an iPod with DAB :-(

the MD unit I used to have (sony g750) had it as part of the earphones.
Worked fine, except for the fact that I work in building so heavily shielded that radio reception is completely nil.
It's a nice thing that Apple could build into a earphone remote unit besides the one they already have. This would be in fact a great product compared to that dumb Burton snowboarding jacket.

Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!
