I'm thinking about throwing a DOS card in an old Mac soley for the purpose of running KaZaA on windows. I'm wondering if anyone else has done this, and what the performance has been? I'm probably going to go with the Apple 100 MHz card because its cheaper than the 600 MHz Orange PC. But will 100 MHz be enough or will it be slow and laggy, and stuff? Plus can you upgrade that card at all? The things we do for free stuff

Damn. Yeah. That will be SLOW. Slower than running VPC slow. And that is slow!

Why are you so hell bent on using Kazaa? It is likely to be shut down shortly. While the various gnutella networks are all less than stellar, there are better solutions for file sharing. Direct Connect has the best file sharing I've found. The program is definitely beta, but I find it has a better selection than even Kazaa did. I've actually stopped using Kazaa.

Incredibly slow. Actually I would think Virtual PC would be an option if you have access to a fairly modern Mac.

Or just use one of the alternatives available for the Mac (you know what I mean...)

I think it would be less frustrating to go to the store and purchase the cds that you are trying to download than dealing with that DOS Card. The whole thought of that sends shivers down my spine!

I used to run Kazaa on a 100MHz 486 computer. It ran it fine, but that's about all the comptuer could do. Nothing else while running Kazaa. Of course it was slow to open the program, etc, but it never had trouble downloading fast. I've had it max out our DSL connection (120 kb/s) a few times.

Many good points. Why am I hell bent on Kazaa?? I'm not hell bent, It just the best one i've used. And I never use it for music, becuase i can never find any high quality stuff on there as far as mp3s go, its all junk. I have VPC but on my dual 533 it really REALLY lags me when i wanna do other things. And these huge 700+ MB downloads can often take days, by then I've started another one, so its like an ongoing thing. Plus to have a PC on a card would be good because if kazaa does end, the next big thing will always be on PC first, much as that sucks. But I don't think Kazaa is going anywhere, as the owners have sold to a company based outside the US, presubably the same owners own it as well, but they kinda made some smart moves so its not leaving anytime soon. As far as headaches go, with the PC card. I may have a few, but not nearly as many as I had trying to build an old cheap actual PC. Nothing but problems. I figure if I can just stick it in a Mac it will be much more reliable. All I plan to run on this thing is kazaa. And possibly other downloading programs. Nothing that really requires any serious speed. But does anyone know about upgrading. When the PC of mine was working, it was running at 166 MHz and it was more than fast enough with windows 2000, so even if I can speed the card up a little, I should be set. ?

I hear there are these things called stores, and they sell stuff like software and movies and songs.
Try going to them and buying the stuff you want.

By that, are you saying you've never downloaded one song, pirated one app, etc? Perhaps I just missed the sarcasm.

I've got a crappy PC laptop that I got for a hundred quid of ebay that I use to run kazaa.... I only use it to download american tv shows, such as scrubs, 24 and CSI as they are not on here, but I can only do one episode at a time, as the HD on the laptop is tiny!

I have a server and download right to it over my network, and control it via VNC, so that might not eb such a bad idea for me.

Are you trying to call me a hypocrite?
If so, it won't work.

I wasn't trying to call you a hypocite at all. Actually, I wasn't being very serious when I replied to your post. I didn't know you were being serious in your post either.

Does that clear things up?

advantages of kazzaa
1. found a copy of 'eraserhead' ive been lookin for that for years now, not to easy to find
2. songs that are not available in a store, ever look for a group called 'psychic tv'? can barely find anything even on kazzaa with it
3. somethings are not worth buying anyways, id rather not pay for it, like visual basic, needed that for school, and im not spending hundreds on some crap that i hate just to use it for a couple of months for school, vb sucks my ass

but i do buy lots of cds and dvds anyways, just somethings are hard to find, or not worth paying for importing charges(like $100), just to listen to a couple of songs on the album

oh and i use it on a pc166 and its ok for just that, nothing else really, and i can mount the drives either on my mac or mount my mac drive on my pc, works ok

but pirating is bad, and more of a moral thing
w3rd..

Buy a cheap box, if you look, you can find a box for Kazaa for little more than the cost of a DOS card.

You could also move on to eDonkey/eMule, which is quite good (mldonkey for OS X). The best actually for large files, not really made for mp3s, but they are there.

Given the new lawsuits against Kazaa, they could possibly go the way of Napster. Then all we'll have is Gnutella.
