Can anyone answer this question, because I am close to ordering a new 20" display. Why is OS X 10.2 a requirement? If the other displays will work fine under 9.2, why not this one?
(and it is actually listed as a "requirement" -- see for yourself!)

Yep. It's not a hardware thing; Mac OS 9's video drivers don't support 1680 x 1050 resolution. (If Mac OS 9 were still being updated this wouldn't be an issue, of course.)

If you look at macnn story, there are a few comments that
it DOES work with OS9, even tho the documentation may omit
it.

Wow, I really hope it works in OS9, I really like this new display but if it doens't work in OS 9 it's useless to me, I use OS9 90% of the time but I still need OS9 for Photoshop ( some filters and helpers app don't work in OSX or are to expensive to upgrade ). It will probably work but I want to be able to calibrate my screen and use the 1680 x 1050 resolution in OS9.

This is idiotic on Apple's part. First the ADC fiasco, now this. There are plenty of other monitors which will work fine with both OS 9 and 10 (and Windows if this keeps up). Certainly makes it harder for me to justify staying. I have an investment in software and other hardware that I don't plan to junk because of some unwarranted, controlling moves by Apple.

It does work on os9 but does not have brightness control options. It has been said before APPLE has phased out os9 If you chose to still use it get use to new products not working with it. Quit your whining (SP). Also ADC is a great Idea from an aesthetic view point (the reason you by an apple lcd) why have all those cables. So you can buy an DVI to ADC box for $99 now. And upgrade to OS X.2 if not don't complain. Life is hard and if your current setup (ie software hardware) works then stick with it and by a Samsung monitor.

The new 20" supposedly runs fine in OS 9, but OS 9 doesn't support the native resolution of the new display, so you get a stretched image, or some black edges. So rather than tell users that it works, but not exactly right, Apple is just keeping it simple by saying it's not supported by OS 9. This is not a controlling move by Apple, nor is it a reason to leave the Mac for Windows. Any other monitor on the market with the same resolution would have the same problem in OS 9.

General HH-
It is stupid on Apple's part and the reason they continue to lose market share. They could easily provide a driver for it. I am not about to buy an "OS X only" computer nor am I going to by an Apple 20" monitor. I don't need a lecture from you on the aethestic value of ADC- an admitted fiasco from Apple-or you telling me what to do about OS10. Oh, and I really want to spend $99 on an adapter. You need to spend your time on something besides being a rank Apple apologist. And, while you are at it, stop whining.

Oh gimme a ****ing break.
1. Apple is not going to loose market share because some stupid diehard doesn't want to buy a $1200 monitor.
2. If you want a big monitor in OS 9 get a cinema display, they are about the same resolution, slightly better looking, and cost only a few bucks more.
3. Nobody gives a crap that you're using OS 9.
Get a life.
