I just purchased an Apple 5.25" Disk Drive, and attached it directly to the external floppy drive port on the back of my Macintosh IIsi. When I first boot, everything is normal (the Mac checks the disk drive for a boot disk, and, upon not finding one, boots from the HD.)
However, once Finder is loaded, the problems begin. The computer attempts to read from the disk drive despite the fact that there is no disk in it and the latch is open. After a few seconds, it momentarily pauses, and gives an error message saying that "Disk Initialization Failed Because the Disk is Locked"
I never inserted a disk or closed the latch, and certainly did not attempt to format it. When I close that message, it does it again, and another pops up. This never stops happening, so I cannot use my Mac with the disk drive plugged in.
Unfortunately, I really need that drive for some work.
I am running System 7.5.3 revision 2. There are no other external devices on the floppy line. The only extensions I have pertaining to disk access are:
PC Exchange (version that shipped with system software)
Apple CD-ROM Access
Apple Audio CD Access
Foreign File Access
What's going on?
Is there a way I can fix this quickly, or will I have to buy an adapter or a different type of drive.
If it's an adapter, can I build it?
