I am interested in purchasing an external firewire DVD burner to use with my Cube and PowerBook. I have heard that external burners are not compatible with iDVD, does anyone know if that is true?

If I cannot use iDVD with an external drive/burner, what other alternatives exist?

Thanks for the insight.

Yes it's true.
Toast works.

Sure, Toast works for the burning of pre-made video files, but Toast doesn't do anything for turning your video into MPEG-2. At the moment the only real option seems to be DVD Studio Pro, which is of course very expensive. There is a program called Capty DVD/VCD from a Japanese company called Pixela, but they don't seem to be selling in the US just yet. Eventually could be an alternative to iDVD.

I've downloaded the upgrade to iMovie, but I haven't had an opportunity to use it yet. Jog my memory here. . . is iMovie's DVD capabilities limited to simply getting a movie ready to burn in iDVD?

In other words, using iMovie 3 to burn a DVD on an external drive isn't an option, right?

i use this software, it came with my ADS InstantDVD for Mac. works pretty good, not as intuitive as iDVD. and the themes could use some work, no way are they on par with iDVD themes. but external drive burning works, although i've only used the burning feature once; it also gives you an option to create a disc image, which you can burn in toast (i use this feature more often).

if pixela would release this software alone here in the states, i think they'd have a hit. they just announced version 2.0 of the software, which adds a few more functions that are in iDVD, like motion menus and data and video on the same disc. hopefully, this software will be released in the US when it comes out in may.
