I had to reinstall X on a friend's iBook. I decided to do a clean install of Jag and then proceeded to install 10.2.3.
She backed up everything on her iPod. Now, I don't own one so I really don't know much about them. When it was time to put her stuff back on her iBook I hooked up the iPod and iTunes started up. Then a message poped up asking if I wanted to replace the current list with the other one. Something like that. (Watching the Laker game combined with me not knowing much about the iPod created this disaster). So I said yes thinking the iTunes' library would be replaced with the iPod's. But as most of you know it was the other way around!!!!
Is there any way to recover the music and files, which were on her iPod? I've looked at versiontracker but didn't find anything. Would Norton help? I don't own it...but if one of you thinks it might help I'll get it.
Any sort of imput would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The short answer, I'm afraid, is "no." iTunes erased the directory. You could try Norton UnErase and see if it can dig up the songs, but I don't have a lot of faith in it.

Wait - all the backed-up non-music files should still be on the iPod.
Having it auto-sync with iTunes erases only the hidden music directory.
Any other files backed up onto the 'pod would be in the visible directory structure, accessible from the Finder, and not deleted...

A surgeon never blames his tools.
Do you have the music backed up? Like on an external? Apple's Backup is handy for saving the music playlist as well. I keep a copy of that on my .Mac account as well as my external.

Man, I thought it wouldn't update an empty library. I gave my cd collection to my brother, downloading the rest that he lost or that's in bad quality. I'm starting with the most listed to and work my my way down. It just took a mouse click for this damn thing to happen. It would be nice if there was a lock feature involved, like blue for readable/ red for erasable. Or maybe I could have done that with permissions, though I'm not sure if it would work. Oh well, what a shitty start to another shitty day.

I think I have the answer. I'm running File Salvage right now. *crosses fingers*
Update: It's slow but it works! I opened a couple songs in quicktime and it plays. The metadata is all there. I hope all the songs works. Thankfully I didn't copy anything to my iPod. Once I'm done I will backup everything to DVD. w00t!
Update 2: Well it's done now.... but not all of the files work... phooey.
