Hi all.

So I broke down tonight and purchased an Lide 30, which seems to be working just fine thus far. Software works great for what it is, although it doesn't seem to play nicely with PS Elements 2. That's the first question:

1) Am I doing something wrong, or does this not work with PS Elements 2?

2) This one is the biggie, and is rather important. Is there a way to append scanned pages? I need to scan about 30 pages from a book and save it all as a PDF. I can't seem to figure out a way to do this. Harumph.

Any help?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

1) The Lide works well with Elements. Just try reinstalling.

2) What do you mean by "append"? And, do you have Acrobat? OCR software? OS 9 or X? The more detail, the better the assistance.

Harumph. I'll try reinstalling to see what happens. Before I do that, though, could you where the scanner plugin goes? I've tried it in the plugins dir of PS and in the import/export dir of PS, neither of which seem to work.

By append, I simply mean that I need to scan a series of pages and have them all attached to one another in succession. I'm scanning an article right now to distribute as a PDF, and I can' figure out a way to have it be saved as one big PDF file with multiple pages rather than as a bunch of individual PDFs. My wife's HP scanner can do this, but I can't figure out how to get the canon to.

I know it has the multi-scan thingy, but unless I'm wrong that just detects page breaks and breaks the file into two. That's not what I need. I need to make a 30 page PDF, not 30 one-page PDFs.

Thanks for your quick response! I'm slogging away at this now....

Cheers

OK, that's what I thought you meant. BUT, you still need to post your set-up. With OmniPage X one can fairly easily append pages...but there's no point in advice without knowing the environment for the advice.

As far as the Plugin: the installer selected the Plugins/Import-Export folder. I've had no problems (and it's the same folder used by Photoshop) . . . let us know if the reinstall helps.

Sorry. Reinstall lets me use PSE 2 just fine, but I still can't figure out a way to append scanned pages.

I do not have Acrobat. In OS X. Using the stock canon software that came with the scanner natively in OS X. Other than PS E, I'm not using anything special. I'm also not using OCR software at this point (for some reason the OCR software that came with the scanner died upon install in classic mode. I suppose I'll just reboot into 9 and install it there).

Found an answer to my own question....not the most intuitive thing in the world, but it works. For anyone who's interested, here's how it works:

In the canoscan toolbox software for OS X, if you select the "PDF settings" button under "save as type." In the dialogue box that pops up, there's an option for "create multiple PDFs."

That's the one. This will allow you to make multi-page scans which are saved as a single file. It doesn't appear to be a very robust option (e.g. you can only append, not prepend), but it does the trick.

Thanks for the help!

I followed the instructions here, but the PDF option was greyed out in the CanoScan Tools. Is there something more I need to install?

Thanks.

You have to use the Save button.

If memory serves, there's a bug in that software that requires you to do just that.

When you open the CanoScan Toolbox, push the 'file' button and you can create PDFs. After you push the 'file' button, you can push the 'PDF settings' button to enable the creation of multiple page PDFs.

Hope this helps. I just installed the software myself and I think the documentation and the installation process are poor. When I try and use the toolbox to scan directly into Photoshop, it tries to open Photoshop in Classic. I still can't fix this.

This problem was fixed for Photoshop Elements by linking it as follows:

Open Canoscan Toolbox.
Click "Scan-1."
Click "Set."
When the dialog box opens, select Applications>Photoshop Elements 2.0>Contents>MacOS>Photoshop Elements 2.0.
Canoscan now launches PE in OS X. I suspect a similar process will have you up and running Photoshop correctly.

Thanks. I actually figured that out a while back and made largely the same remarks you did. It should be easier.

Another topic: is it my imagination, or is there no X version of Omnipage SE?

Midwinter -

Sorry that I was not clearer, but I was trying to give Serranot a little help because he seemed to still be having problems with the PDF issue.

Also, I sure didn't see an OS X version of OmniPage in the software from Canon. They probably think we should feel lucky just to have OS X drivers. I had to purchase this Lide 30 to replace my less than two year old Canon N1220 because Canon was never going to write OS X drivers for it.
