Having stumbled across the Firewire Depot site while searching for HDDs, I came across the following:

(sorry cannot make a link out of it, since the Instant VB code throws a syntax error in IE 6)

Has anyone used one of these Mars II LapLight USB/LED lights before? Anyone have any comments/suggestions etc. I am in the market for a USB light for my Powerbook, and the only other model I have seen is the Kensington Flylight (and a few really cheap ones on eBay.) Any comments on the Flylight.

Finally, the only mention on the web I can find for the LapLight is the Firewire Depot site... Surely not?! There must be another supplier/manufactuer web site etc... Any hints?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew Baker

I love the flylight. It can be a bit harsh at times (darkened plane, for example) but it's very helpful when conducting a presentation and I've needed to enter data.

And with minimal impact on battery life, I've found it to be very valuable. As always, YMMV.

Thanks for the tip.
Am really hoping for comments re the LapLight v Flylight.
Another question for any posters: what sort of spread can you expect from these lights? For example would it cover the whole keyboard of my 15" TiBook sufficiently to see all keys?

I have the silver flylight and it's pretty cool but there are times where it is just too bright and becomes annoying. There is no way to adjust it except for moving it away from the keyboard. The mars light seems to be the same way except there is more than one LED. This might be a bit less harsh than the flylight which has a very pronounced 'hotspot'. You can also add on more lights as needed.

I wish there was a way to throttle the power on the USB port to adjust the brightness. However, I think LED's are either ON or OFF, nothing in between. Of course if Apple would adopt the fiber optic glowing keys in all their portables, we wouldn't need lights. Maybe in a few years-
