Should I purchase a separate fax printer to use with my PowerBook 550 or just use an OS X fax app? I don't know much about fax machines, fax software, or faxing on the Mac, so any help would be appreciated.
I've heard about eCocoa and FaxStf, but have never used them. I'd need the faxing for moderate business use as well as personal/academic use. Do the fax printers work well with Macs? Do the various software options work well and smoothly or are they frought with errors, hassles, and frustration? Can a person relatively uncomfortable with technology (i.e. a roommate) learn to use the Mac fax software smoothly?
Thanks in advance for any help.

A standalone machine sure has its advantages (e. g. serves as a copier).

I grudginly use the FasStf software, and it seems to work OK, but it doesn't fax from PDF yet. So you have to create the document you want to fax in something else.
As far as receiveing faxes, I find it works fine. And to save faxes you receive, I just use the print to PDF function from within Fax Browser.
I don't have a separate fax machine.

I hate FaxSTF. I hated it in 9 and I now in X. It's a stupid app that rarely, barely works made by an even more stupid and disinterested developer. If it's working for you now, great, but I'd be willing to bet that it will stop working soon enough. And if things about it bother you, you may as well get used to them.
Cocoa eFax is just now out of beta yet pretty reliable and feature-rich. It's developer is interested in making it the best he can and is quick to respond to problems. Plus for 10 bucks, you really can't beat it. Even if you do get a fax machine, you'll find it handy sometimes to have it.

Another vote for Cocoa eFax. I used it last week with no problems. It is getting pretty good. Address Book integration, fax directly from scanner (didn't work for me though), fax browser, cover pages, etc.
It's dirt cheap, and you can send 5 faxes during the trial period.

Your scanner has to be recognized by Image Capture to work with that feature. It is a pretty decent list of scanners.
