iPod - US vs. international versions?

I'm moving to the US for the next five months or so and think about buying an iPod there (as they're much cheaper than in Germany).
Are there any differences between US and international versions? As the iPod is charged via Firewire, there should be no power supply issue, but maybe the US iPods cannot deal with international characters (like German Umlaute) in song titles and/or contacts/appointments? If so, I'd rather get myself a German iPod, as I really like to use the original spelling instead of translating everything to 7bit.
Any suggestions appreciated.

The iPod software comes with several choices of language. You should have no problems with the interface language or song titles with international characters.

Thanks! This sounds good to me, as I will save about EUR 100.

I bought an iPod in the US and it works fine. The only thing will be that the charger fitting will be for the US. Of course you can just plug a standard cable in after removing the fitting, or if you're feeling rich, buy the international plug adapter kit from the Apple Store. Of course, you could just charge with your computer....
FYI, the power adapter is 100-240V so it will work fine anywhere (UNLIKE THE AIRPORT BASESTATION!!!!!!!!!! :-(

The iPod software is the same for US and international versions, so it will not have any problems with special/extended characters/
One thing to take into consideration, however, would be warranty. I'm not sure that if you need a waaranty repair in Europe, you could get your ipod fixed. The US warranty is(was?) 90 days, while the European one is a year.
If your battery malfunctions, or another defect comes up, is that worth the 100 euro difference? Up to you I suppose..

As a follow up to the last message, the difference in volume is tiny and only happens if you upgrade to 1.2.1
