I would like to use the A3 printing capabilities of my old PhotoEx, I can get round the usb/serial problem ok but are there any OSX drivers or hacks I can use???

Try Gimp Print.

Yep, I have one at home hooked up to my LAN with an Axis 1440 print server--using Gimp and GhostScript.
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.
