I have just had adsl installed on my phone line and Telstra gave me an Alcatel 4 port modem as I want to run it through airport so that I can share the connection, but I can't get it set up even without the airport. Any suggestions on how to set up the modem and airport?

if you're running os 9, then I think you need a disc from telstra. if running 10, then you don't need a disc.

in os 10, go to the apple sign in the upper left corner, to location, then to network preferences. in the locations box, go to add location
at the PPoE section, add your account name (xxxx@bigpond) then your password that telstra should have given you.
there are probably more things to do but I can't remeber, 'cause I was looking over the installer from telstra (which is a big rip off 'cause he had no idea how to use an apple and I was doing most of the work!).

I have the 1 port alcatel modem and also went and bought a router from netgear. for the router, I had to go to network preferences, add new location, and at the configure box, go to use DHCP (the show inbox should say built-in ethernet). Don't know if this helps at all with the airport, don't have one myself. but the router took care of the rest for me.

good luck, should be really easy setting your modem from telstra though.

Thanks for your help, I got it working prior to your advice but I will keep your message should I have any problems. A guy in Brisbane has a website called www.ozcableguy.com and I found him through bigpond's support forum and he has an amazing amount of stuff on his site, but despite that, he emailed me direct four or five times with tips and pointed me to specific topics on his sites and he was sensational. Check out his site if you ever need to know anything about networking etc as he has it all there. Basically what he did was get me to configure the router as a bridge and then just connect it to the airport and it is flying with a mix of an imac flat panel and two pc's one running XP and one running win98 all sharing the same adsl connection. And this is after a snotty nosed telstra help desk person told me that they don't support OSX or networking and that I should change the router for a USB modem and it "should work" for just the mac, but don't even think about networking because it is impossible with macs!
