i have tons of books that i would like to inventory and get rid of, but i don't want to do it by hand if i can help it. i've seen barcode scanners for sale - has anyone used one to scan items? i'm wondering if they will read the info off the barcode and give me title, author, etc etc, or if they can connect to a web site the wait that itunes can connect to the music database and get song titles for most all music out there.

I've used a program called Readerware that works with barcode scanners. Barcode scanners work essentially like a keyboard, except instead of you typing the code sequence in, the scanner reads the barcode an automatically "types" the code in for you.

No scanner will tell you title, author, etc... You use it in conjunction with a database program you already use to lookup the information quickly, or with a program that will take the code and search on-line. Currently, I don't know of a CDDB type site for books, but there are sites out there (like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc...) that allow you to search based on ISBN. Programs like Readerware also automate that process.
