I have a Laserwriter Select 360 attached to a G4 Dual 1Ghz through an Asantetalk hardware bridge. I turn the computer and all peripherals off at night, and before Jaguar, the printer worked perfectly. The asantetalk is plugged into a hub, which is plugged into the G4 through a second ethernet card in a pci slot. The G4 could always find the printer through the Asantetalk. After upgrading to Jaguar, nothing. I could still use the printer without a problem in OS 9, but it was useless in Jaguar. I searched through many forums all over the web, emailed asante for months (they actually blamed apple for screwing up the networking in Jag and said they had no answer).

I finally found a solution!! Not sure if I read it somewhere or if it came in a dream. Here's the answer: I still power everything up through a powerstrip, so I have one master power switch. After everything starts up, I go to the System Preferences, and to the Sharing Pane. Turn on internet sharing through the second ethernet card, and lo and behold, the asante lights start blinking. To be sure, I unplug the Asantetalk for a second. When it comes back on, it polls the network. You'll see the lights blinking. You should be able to find the printer through the Print Center. If you have problems, try option clicking the 'Add Printer' button.

I hope this helps some other lost soul...

I don't get it. I've been using my AsanteTalk with my HP LJ 6MP for years and it made it from PB through current 10.2.4, using AppleTalk, without a hitch. Did you have AppleTalk enabled in Network pref pane? Did you try IP printing?

I did not try IP printing, but tried everything else. I think it has something to do with the second ethernet card being used to connect to the printer. I did try to connect through the built-in ethernet using a crossover and still had no luck.

Although I didn't see an uproar over this issue, I know there were a handful of folks affected. Consider yourself lucky. Hopefully this may help someone else.

Ya, but I don't see what internet sharing has to do with printing. Maybe your problem was the crossover cable. Oh well, if it works...

I have no explanation. I eventually traced the problem using the Network Utility. Even with updated drivers for the NIC crad, the Network Util saw the card as unactive. The only thing that would bring the card active was to activate internet sharing. I doubt this is the best solution, but it is a pretty painless workaround.
