I don't even have an iPod yet, but would like to know...

What PIMs can I sync with? Address Book/iCal only?
Do the groups follow to the iPod from Address Book? This is really the big one. I'd like to be able to separate the contacts on the iPod by group. I do this a lot on my Palm.

Any help appreciated.

You can sync various PIMs with the iPod. Search around www.versiontracker.com and you can find conduits for Palm, Lotus, and others. Also, the iPod contacts is based on standard vCards, so you can always export the data from your PIM of choice to that format, then just drag them onto the iPod. iSync is the easiest solution, though, IMO.

As for groups: The iPod will just display all of your contacts at once in alphabetical order. No groups, etc. Remember that the Contacts function was only added as a nice, convenient little extra for the iPod. It's an mp3 player, not a PDA.

Ok, thanks. I really search for people by category a lot, though. I wonder if you could separate them into different folders on the iPod to get this effect? I've really never looked at the iPod's UI for contacts, so I'm totally grasping here. Sorry if I'm way off.

Basically, you select the iPod's Contacts "app," and you're presented with one big list of all your contacts in alphabetical order. No groups, no folders, nothing.
Then, you can use the iPod's wheel to scroll up and down the list. When the contact you want is highlighted, you can press the select button and the screen will display all of that contact's information (phone, email, address, etc. as it appears in your Address Book).
