Any ideas on the advantages of a ae base station with modem vs. without, if going to use dialup and have an internal modem in machine?

To avoid any possible conflicts, if I were going to have internet on my wireless network via a 56k internet connection, I'd definitely get the AE Base Station w/ the modem in it. To use the internal modem to connect would render that computer non-wireless to begin with, then you'd hafta hub other computers & your AE Base Station to that connection to get the rest of the computers wireless, and suddenly your trouble and money have exceeded the cost of an AE Base Station w/ modem & antenna. With the 56k jack IN the AE Base Station, you simple plug a standard phone cord from the wall jack into the Station, and all your computers are wireless. No phone cords running to computers or anything, they can just connect wirelessly. Hope this helps, and if you have further questions, just post 'em!

I just got the AE base a while back, and opted for the one without the external antenaae and modem.
I always connect to my broadband (has not been down yet...) and I am not planning to go back to a shoddy old modem. Well, I use it when I am out travelling, but hey, I have not got my base station with me anyway.
I think the price difference is quite a lot for a Modem (that you already have in your mac) and an external antennae port.

If you have a very large home, then well...yes....the case is different. You would probably need an extra antennae...I Guess.

If you have coverage (theoretically) where you want to use the wireless network, and only use a broadband connection, go for the base without the modem..

That's what I thought about it anyway.

i was on the phone with a sales person at the apple store when i was going to go in to buy my ibook, basestation and airport card.

he asked whether i wanted the one with the modem and antenna or without. i asked what the differences are and he just said, further reception and a modem.

my airport reception is *way* more than i need, i have tested it and there is no chance that i will be going back to a modem.

Go price out a replacement internal modem for a current Mac. 50 bucks is actually a steal for one.
I have great xoverage all around my house with my Asante router. Except for ONE room. The signal just dies in there. It's gotta be some sort of interference. I'm guessing, though, that an ext antenna would help with that a lot. If I were shopping for one, I'd get the $250 model.

The key in his post was that he *WILL* be using the AirPort Extreme Base Station to wirelessly transmit *56k* internet signals. If he had access to broadband, the choice would be easy based on whether or not he'd need an antenna, but he was asking if it would be smarter to use the built-in 56k modem in the AE Base Station or just use the modem in his Mac instead.

My stand remains the same, if you will be using 56k internet, definitely get the AE Base Station w/ the modem.

50 bucks is a steal??? Mac modem???

I think you will have to check out the prices for a PCI modem. from 20 pounds and up or something like that I think. I do not care if it is a mac modem or pc modem. Does the same thing (maybe not in the same computer) and should cost round about the same....no?

[don't want to start a fight here...] It is strange how much battering mac owners are willing to take for their hardware. Yes, check my signature for apple stuff....there is some there.

I just don;t think you can say that 50 bucks is ok for a plug and a modem...sorry

I'm talking about internal modems. Are you?
Yeah, if you're gonna rely on dial up, get the modem version BS. This makes more sense.
