Don't know what happened there, but what I was going to say, was that I got my 200GB external firewire HD today....d2 from lacie, and it is way cool!

I am going to put some of my large cd collection on it. Very cool!
I love the space...but will probably need another drive soon. At least with the rate I am filling it with now.

I have the same drive. It's fantastic ain't it?

I have to ask though, how many friggin' CD's do you own that once you import and encode them into the much smaller mp3 format, will still threaten to fill up 200 gigs of disk space?!? Holy crap.

I just batch captured almost 7 hours of DV footage with FCP and it didn't even fill up half the drive!! And I thought this was going to a tight squeeze? whoa. Amazing. I didn't realize how humongous 200 gigs really was until now. This beauty WILL be my scratch disk for years to come. And I love how I can easily swap it between my macs and powerbook and be able to edit on whichever system becomes convenient.

btw, which Wacom tablet do you have? How is it? I'm in the market for one mainly for photoshop work. Advice welcome.

I am not quite sure how many cd's I have at the moment. Some of them are here with me in the UK, others are back in norway.

There are more than 1200 cd's, and the drive will get the usual backup and such as well...ah, and plus my pictures from my digicam/iPhoto.

Wanted to set this drive up as my music drive though. Have a powermac4400 in norway, so when I go there next year, I will set that up as a server and put a firewire card in it. Then I can play tunes wireless from my 667DVI, or the 12" that I will probably have by then.

It's a holdup in all the cd-copying, since my pb is in for repairs. Its getting a new drive apparently.
It did not like to read some audio cds, and cdrw's were a real pain to get into it...

I've been looking at the d2 (200gb) as a backup, possibly take-to-work drive. Is it portable? I have a 10gb in my tibook, and this would be less expensive than a 60gb travelstar (not to mention the headache of switching drives)...

One last question -- is it quiet, or is there a fan running constantly?

Thanks!

Hi,
I am also looking for external storage and the Lacie. Is it capable of RAID? What is the manufacturer of the harddisk? And is the disk swappable (i.e. can you open the box)?
Thanks

The drive is not really really protable, but it could be done. The external powersupply is a bit bigger than the one that comes with the new airport basestations. I think that if you want to take a drive back and forth, you are probably better off with a portable drive. Yes, I know you get smaller storage space, but I think weight would be a big factor to me if I was going to lug it around.
Bottom line of that one: No, it's not really portable. I would not use it to take it back and forth every day. If we are talking once per week (Like for that weekend work at home) then, yes, I would be able to drag it home...

The fan (yes there is a fan) is very very quiet. It makes less noise than my powerbook 667 DVI when the fan is on its lower speed. I have the drive right next to me on the desk, and the drive is hardly noticeable. Put some music on, or mix this with office sounds, and you will not hear it at all.

I don't know about RAID, or even what that is....sorry. Always thought that was something spooky.
Check out their webpage, it is a lacie harddrive. Lacie d2 200GB firewire.

No, I do not think it is any point in opening the drive enclosure. It only has one screw on the back, and it does not seem like it is made to take apart. Nor does it say anything about this in the documentation...I think. Check out their webpage for this as well. its here:

Jamez,

I am planning on buying a Lacie d2 200gb drive. Where did you buy your's? I've been checking around and it looks like Lacie is the best place to buy from, price-wise anyway.

jamez-

Thanks for the info. Reviews on this drive have been few and very far between.

You mention that the power supply is larger than the airport power supply. I have an old grey airport, and the powersupply is a thin wall-wart, ie. it blocks at least two other outlets on the power strip. Same deal with this one?

Lowest I've seen them for is about 380 i think, via mysimon. Apple store for education is about that too, but then figure tax + shipping.

Lacie sells direct for $369 plus $10 shipping - no tax. My local Apple Store has it for $399 plus tax. Other on-line sites have been in the $370-$380 (plus shipping) range. I'll probably buy from Lacie this week, just doing a little checking for the best price.

thanks,

Joel
