please ease my switcher queries

Ok, i'm about to buy a External firewire casing for 62 dollars and Samsung 48x24x48x16 cdrw/dvd rom combo drive for 90 dollars

Exactly how will it work on me?

I plug in the firewire cable and the ibook will instantly recognise it as a firewire device and it can be used straightaway?

What about burning?
Just use apple's default burning tool?

How about erasing rewritable material off my cdrw?

Thanks

i have an external firewire cd-rw connected to my powermac g4 cube.

i leave the cd-rw drive connected via firewire and when powered-on, my cube instantly recognizes it and it can be used straightaway (by itunes, iphoto, toast, jam, etc.). i use jam mainly for burning audio discs (cross-fades, etc.), but itunes works great too.

the only issue i can think of is whether your samsung 48x24x48x16 cdrw/dvd drive is compatible with itunes, etc. to avail your concerns, i'd double check www.xlr8yourmac.com, or apple's site (itunes) so make sure this drive is supported. i use an older lacie firewire cd-rw.

this might help

The Samsung 48x24x48x16 cdrw/dvd combo drive rocks!!

I just bought it yesterday and slotted into a firewire casing

Connected it to my ibook and it was instantly recognized.

First test was dvds

I used VLC because apple dvd couldnt detect the dvd rom

I threw in Region 1, region 3 and region 4 dvds, D9 dvds and all played flawlessly. VLC rocks! No region counters needed to be set, it just plays everything

Next up was burning, Itunes' basic burner couldt recognize the writer but Roxio titanium toast could and i burnt a 300mb data cd in 1 minute using 32x speed. Didnt have media for 48x speed.

Very happy with my purchase.

Here's a picture of my ibook with the external firewire casing. Now its powerpacked!! Cdrom, 48x writable cdrw, 16x dvd.

And i payed only 260 sing dollars for the drive and the casing. I would have to pay 500 dollars to get the crappy apple combo drive that sucks ****
