Do you folks think they won't come before the Music Service?

Yeah, me too, but I hope there's something that warrants this wait aside from the effect of having the announcements coincide.
There seem to be a fair few people holding off for the new ones, and this can't be all that good for Apple. Still, they've been in business a lot longer than I have
I couldn't talk my sister out of buying a 10GB iPod for her boyfriend's birthday, so it's obviously not everyone that's waiting...
If I knew there was nothing aside from bigger hard disks at given price points coming in the new ones I would find a promotion now and buy one. If there was something I wanted that couldn't be covered by a firmware update I'd wait, though.

How about AAC playback? It is rumored that the new iPods will have this, and I'm not sure if it's even possible to add this to older players with a firmware upgrade.

I have an Apple expo in town in a week. If I see an iPod, I'm buying it, not waiting any longer.

What else can be added to iPods, colour screen, bluetooth. Most playback options can surely be done with a simple firmware update?

Well for the xtra PC market they have picked up, you would want to hope that if/when new changes come about that Firmware can update the older models. That sure would keep everyone happy!
Design changes?? I guess we will just have to wait and see...

I just went ahead and bought a 10GB iPod myself. After reading all the rumours that were posted here a month ago, I was worried that I should hold back. After questioning a few of the rumours for even a SHRED, a HINT, of evidence, the rumour topics dried up.
Basically, there is no evidence of an upgrade anytime soon. I agree that something will happen with the musci server, but hell, that could be a software update for all we know. If the only difference is a bigger drive or lower cost, I just don't see the point in waiting.
My view is this - I don't need a PDA, I don't want a colour screen that looks pretty and shortens battery life. I don't want a radio tuner and I don't want to watch video. What I want is a light, reliable, sleek MP3 player, and that's exactly what the iPod is.
If a new version comes out that really blows my mind, I'll buy it and eBay this one - but I just can't see that happening. As for HD size, I've got 6.5GB of music on mine and quite frankly, I don't think I'll even listen to a quarter of what there is - why you'd need a 40GB HD is beyond me. Of course, file storage is one reason, but as I have a 40GB drive inside a firewire Cutie case, that's not applicable in my situation. Your experience may vary.
Point being? If you want one, go for it. You won't be dissapointed by the iPod's performance - I love it, and I don't even have a Mac yet (Xplay for Windows works just great, by the way!).

The things I personally would be looking for would be a FM receiver and cheaper prices. I have about 30 GB of tunes on my home Mac, but I do not think I would need all them loaded on the iPod. Xtra space for files would be handy though....

Can current ipods (with a 3rd party peripheral or not) record audio from a microphone?

I don't know enough about the issues involved to know for sure, but a lot of people (though of course this doesn't make it true!) have said that new file formats shouldn't be a problem if Apple releases the appropriate firmware.
I had ordered a 10GB last time I was in the States, but I cancelled it because it was taking too long to ship and might have arrived after I'd left the US. I regret that sometimes, but I still think that they'll either drop the price or up the sizes soon. I couldn't care less about anything else - I do *not* want feature bloat.
Now if Apple were to offer two versions then maybe that'd make it a more attractive option...
