Affordable is a very subjective term when it comes to video editing equipment. I use a
Sony DSR-11 which runs about $1700. Very robust DV/DV-CAM NTSC/PAL deck.
There are some cheaper Sony clamshell type decks you can use. See:
GV-D1000. The problem is that these clamshell decks use a cheaper, less durable transport mechanism - the kind used in camcorders. They aren't as accurate, quick or lasting as the DSR-11s and others. But they're good for budget work.
As far as recording capability - I can't think of any deck that is only for playback. I don't think you'll find a price break in that dept.
