Can someone recommend a decent but affordable mini DV editing deck compatible with FCP via firewire?

No need for recording feature here. Strictly just a playback deck for logging and capturing is all I need if there is such a thing.

Thanks.

Affordable is a very subjective term when it comes to video editing equipment. I use a Sony DSR-11 which runs about $1700. Very robust DV/DV-CAM NTSC/PAL deck.

There are some cheaper Sony clamshell type decks you can use. See: GV-D1000. The problem is that these clamshell decks use a cheaper, less durable transport mechanism - the kind used in camcorders. They aren't as accurate, quick or lasting as the DSR-11s and others. But they're good for budget work.

As far as recording capability - I can't think of any deck that is only for playback. I don't think you'll find a price break in that dept.

Let me know if you need more info. Good luck.

Thanks. That DSR-11 looks good. Pricey you're right, and I kinda figured it would be since nothing about video-editing stuff has come cheap thus far.

I guess this little hobby is going to cost me a few bucks after all... more than golf. I should've stopped at iMovie and my cheap camera when I had the chance
