I just purchased a brand new HP 2200dse printer. It is rated at about 19pages/min and is really quick at spitting out spreadsheets and word documents.
However, it is really slow at printing out pictures from iPhoto (contact sheet) and various webpages. It literally takes the printer about 5-10 mins per page when doing anything with graphics.
I have it hooked up to my Airport Extreme through the USB Printer Server and it works well.
I purchased this printer to replace my Deskjet 6122 because it was supposed to be significantly faster, but it is terribly slow when graphics are involved.
The printer currently has 8MB of Memory and I can put in an additional 64MB. Would this solve my problems?
Any help would be appreciated....I never remember laser printers being this slow, even with graphics.
Otherwise the printer is quite nice.
Thanks,
David J

There is an easy solution to your problem. Simply add more memory. By adding memory you can cut graphic printing times by as much as 80%. Memory is cheap and you can by decent memory at Coast to Coast.

David: I'm glad to hear you got a LaserJet 2200 with the duplexing unit. And I'm glad to hear it's working well (except for graphics). I wonder whether the slow graphics printing is due not just to the 16MB memory in the printer, but also to the fact that you're using your ABS as a print server. I'm considering a 2200 series as well, but I'm leaning towards the DN (duplex network) version. I expect the built-in print-server will provide better performance and better cross-platform compatibility.
I have a related question. When you use an ABS as a print server, can you print to the attached printer from a Wintel box as well? Or is printing via ABS reserved for OS X systems?

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Thanks for the advice the other day. The LaserJet 2200dse is a great printer...the duplex function is really nice.
I would have gotten the dtn, however I got a really great deal on the dse that I couldn't pass up. It seems to work really well with the AEBS as well.
I tried hooking up the printer directly to the computer and it was still slow printing graphics...I think the memory needs to be upgraded. I'll try that later this week and get back to you.
To answer your question....yes, a PC can print to a printer connected to an AEBS. It is very easy to configure and get setup.
Thanks again,
DJ

I'm glad that I was able to help and that you are happy with the choice you made. Duplex printers should really be more popular, especially in the high-paper-consumption legal industry. In the two years I worked at a New York firm before law school, I probably killed more trees than during my entire life up to then. A duplexing feature on our network lasers would have saved half of those trees, probably equivalent to multiple acres of forest.

Is that "really great deal" on the DSE available to the public at large? If yes, I might be interested. HP's internal print servers are bloody expensive. AFAIR, the 615N costs more than $300. Assuming the AEBS works well, it's a more affordable option at $200, and it offers more functionality (i.e. WiFi) to boot.

I guess it's not just operating systems and software applications that keep gobbling up more RAM. Printers are memory-hungry too. I look forward to your feedback once you've bumpted the printer's memory.

This Windows compatibility makes the AEBS an attractive alternative to HP's internal print-server.

That's really interesting. I wonder if OS 9 machines can print to these printers as well. I was under the impression that this was not possible, due to Apple's own site:
(3) Wireless Internet access requires a wireless-enabled computer, a base station or other access point, and Internet access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort and AirPort Extreme. Wireless printing over USB requires Mac OS X v10.2.3 or later and a compatible printer.

Are you sure you use the printer via PostScript. CUPS does have a built-in PostScript-PCL RIP that's considerably slower. Other than that, is it connected via USB (which is faster than network interfaces due to the lack of overhead)?

I'm using the OS X Built in Driver. How do I know if I am printing using postscript?
Thanks,
DJ
