Hello
my epson 860 died and was wondering if an old Apple laser printer I have can be connect to a new G4 dual with the proper cables etc.

is there a way to connect the old apple serial ( the round appletalk cable) to USB?

will the old apple laserwriters work in OS X?
thanks much

I would concentrate more on getting it to connect via ethernet, not USB. You could buy an AsanteTalk device on eBay cheap. This takes the localtalk cable in and bridges it to ethernet out. Very simple, no software to install and reliable. I've used one for years now with my old HP LaserJet 6MP.
If you've got a home LAN set up, you can plug the printer into a router or switch and it will be available across the network.

Printer drivers shouldn't be a problem. What model printer is it?

It depends. Our old Personal Laserwriter 320 worked since the Public Beta. I've heard the Laserwriter 300 wouldn't. I think to work they have to support Postscript 2.

I've been using an old LaserWriter 630 with no problems, but it does support postscript and has and ethernet connection...

I have a LaserWriter Plus and have been wondering how to get it connected to my iMac DV. I've also got some older Macs with serial ports if that's any easier.

Once again, AsanteTalk. But I'd shop eBay for 'em.

I am using a laser writer II NT with my G4 and 10.2.4.

You will need an ethernet/local talk bridge, unless the printer has ethernet of course.

If OS X does not have the printer driver try gimp-print.

If you need postscript level one ( 10.2 does not support this) then download

pslevel1-foomatic-1.1.ppc.dmg

this and gimp print can be found at http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/

The only software needed is gimp-print and pslevel1-foomatic-1.1.ppc both are free from http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/

The hardware needed is the Asante Talk ethernet bridge. This does not require any software, it just works!

good luck.
