I highly recommend's LaCie's firewire D2 drives. I have the 7200rpm 200gig and 120gig models and they're good for archiving, DV-capture streaming, and such. I use the 200gig as my scratch disk for FCP and iMovie and it works great. Right out of the box, they were pre-formatted HFS+ and ready to use with OSX. Outstanding customer support from LaCie and if your order directly from them, there is no sales tax because they're based in Oregon. I also have Acomdata and Maxtor external firewire drives and they also work well except they're a little bit noisier than the LaCie and they don't look nearly as good.

I have to back up the last one and say that the lacie drives are great. I have the same 7200rpm d2 firewire drive...200gig.
No problems and fast. Use it for my music and for archiving.

Or if you intend to take the data with you a lot, a 2.5" external HD would be an option ...

If it'll be at home anyway, go for a 3.5" one. Much larger capacity at the same price. Better performance.

good point. You get sooo much more for your money with a 3.5"...
I was considering mobility with mine and figured that most of my work could be on my harddrive at home. I just lug around the work I am doing right now...

I just want to back up comments about LaCie's excellent customer service. I had a CD burner go bad on me; they walked me through a bunch of steps then said, send it back, we'll take care of it.

I also have an 80 GB ABS drive, with backup software. And it's quite excellent. They (CMS) also have very, very good customer service. I thought the drive blew up, they, too, said send it back. And I had everything ready to go when it occurred to me to try (one last time!) the drive with a different cord. TUrned out the cord was bad, not the drive. SO I just kept it. In fact, I was thinking of getting another for my new PB -- but man, are those drives expensive! Good back-up software, though. Makes backing up a snap.

Yep, Lacie is awsome. I too had one of their CDRWs go bad. Same experience, they sent me a NEW and FASTER one. GREAT customer service is gives them my vote.

I need a 200GB drive myself, and their price is better than the OWC version (only difference that I can see is that the OWC one has 8MB buffer over Lacie's 2MB). Anyone know the benifit?

Yup, I had to decide, too, last December: a 10 gigger iPod + external HD or the 20 gigger iPod. I went for the 20 gigger, because my music library was already at 14 gigs back then ... go figure.

Maybe I am going to get an external HD, but I can still do that. I do some backups via tar on my parents' PC (with a new 80 gig HD). Works fine for me.

I wanted to buy a Maxtor (not as loud as the others), but the model I wanted wasn't available. So I have bought another IBM (the PC already had an 8 gig IBM HD), 80 GB @_7,200. Very fast, not nearly as noisy as I thought (you can barely hear it because of all the fans and mainly the old 8 gig HD).

No failures yet ... But I do backup though.

hehe...
I do backup to the external drive, and sometimes I wish I could back up that again with another drive,...or maybe dvd.
I have not been big on backing up before, but now I cannot get enough of it.

I too have the Lacie D2. 120gig a/v drive
Worked right out of the box, helped convince me to Switch/Mix"
I was able to transfer the contents of my 10gig PB drive to it and clone it to the new 40gig without problems. Also works great with Imovie.

Looks Cool too!
