I was at comp usa today and I noticed they have a whole stack of faulty ipods at pretty good prices, 199 for the 10 gig model, 149 for 5 and I think 249 for 20. I asked the guy about them and he said they were all first generation and had bad hard drives. I was wondering if anyone had any info on ipod repair, if it would be worth it to buy one and try and install a new hard drive.

I can't imagine they're selling them with bad HD's in them? The drives must have been replaced if they're being sold as refurbs.

As for replacing the drive yourself... it's likely the refurb plus a new drive would cost significantly more than an iPod of the same size... and it likely wouldn't work anyway as I hear the pinouts on the HDs in the iPod are proprietary.

yeah they are labeled 'nonfuctional' or something like that, not refurb. There is a whole stack of them, not sure why anyone would want to buy one if there wasn't anyway to get them working.

oh well thanks for the info.

I can't imagine who would buy one of those. I also can't imagine why a 20 GB iPod would be for sale as nonfunctional -- it should still be in warranty.

It seems a bit fishy to me
