i just upgraded my B&W G3 to OSX10.2 and the palm desktop 4.0 but my avantgo is not supported for OSX.
is there another program like avantgo that will work under OSX? or a hack for avantgo to work? (instead of using classic)
i have a handspring visor deluxe, and i really need to use an app like avantgo for info during the day, news, movie times, etc...
thanks in advance

Download the .prc files from someplace and install them. If you can get an internet connection to your palm either from your computer or wifi or through bluetooth or something, you can configure it and use it that way.
I've done it with the 5.0 beta and it works ok, except that it keeps making my TT have to reset. I'm not sure why.
There's also plucker, which is an opensource program that's supposed to be pretty good too. I've not used it, so I can't speak for it.

It's the sole reason I have VPC installed on my machine. Works like a charm, except for the fact that it's a pain in the ass.

No, that's what happens after the first time you sync. Other times, it'll have to do it on occassion if you've installed something that requires it. I was talking about avantgo making my palm look like it had never been synced, so everything gets installed and all my changes get wiped out. It sucks. But what you saw was normal for a first sync.

Have you tried Plucker? I may give it a go tonight just because I'm bored. I'll post back if I do...

Sweeeeet!!! I got plucker to work and it's a great alternative. Not perfect because there's no conduit for it, but it works just fine. I found good directions for getting it working here. Just follow the directions and do a search for example.jxl on google (because the article is a little old and jpluck seems to have changed some) and you're good to go. Make sure that if you choose a compression option (like zlib) that you've got it installed. You can find a link off the plucker page. It's relatively straightforward to setup. I can walk you through it if you need help.
btw, apparently the zlib compression for ARM processors (TT or newer clies) helps a whole hell of a lot in terms of speed and size.

Plucker works pretty good. If you install some extra libraries and stuff (some of which have a plug and play install with the LaTex install found on the page for Texshop), you can do images too. Just set up the html file that lists what files you want to download, and write a cron script to run plucker whenever you want. Then, follow it up with another cronscript that copies the newly made plucker file to the "files to be installed" folder of you palm software. really does work quite well. If you need help doing some of this stuff (some CLI stuff in here) I can try to write up a Howto in the next couple days.

Ok, this may not be much use to you, but if you want to read news feeds (RSS) offline on your Visor then how about this?

Ok, I wrote up a walkthrough of how to get Plucker on your palm and mac, and how to get it running. I am a little rusty on some of the setup (mainly making your home.html file, which is the file that you tell plucker what you want to suck), but I think I got most of it down. Its a bit convoluted at parts, not because its a particularly difficult install, but because I did it in a roundabout way.
You see, I originally had it working with some libraries I snagged from fink, then I deleted my /usr/local directory, losing it all. Then, just the other week, I downloaded some other libraries for a Tex install, and upon realizing some of them were the ones needed for plucker, I reloaded plucker. So, to make a long story short, this process should work, but you might be installing a couple extra unnecessary things.

Thanks for the guide -- I got it going. Not the most user friendly thing in the world. I would think that someone could write a GUI front-end and integrated installer fairly easily. I would think this would be pretty popular if they did.
Does the .plucker directory need to be invisible? Is there any problem with me just changing it to "plucker"?

yeah, its not the most user friendly, but it does work great once you get it going. It's also nice since there are some other books, etc. in the plucker format.
It could use a straight forward install. I'd go for it, but I'm not quite sure how to make an installer.
As far as I know, the .plucker directory could have its name changed, but I would imagine you would need to change some setting somewhere... and I don't know where that setting would be....

I've also been working with iSilo and the Mac OS X program iSiloX. It can read avantgo channels and so forth, or regular web pages. I would give it a try. Much easier to set up and use than plucker (although lacking some of the automation).

Umm, we're just trying to help you here, guy.
iSilo is a document reader for the palm. iSiloX is a program to convert text and web pages to the iSilo format. It's relatively straightforward, especially compared to plucker...

Yeah plucker was a pain in the butt to set up, but I liked the free bit, and the automation bit. Really is a breeze to use now, as long as you know a little html to set up your home page. If I get some more time at some point, I will look into making an installer if I can figure out how...

I'm not sure what's hard to set up with plucker. I found a java app that I can use to get the .jxl file in and edit it and the actual installation has a pkg that installs it. Did I miss something? I'm gonna have a look at the automation thing you've got. That's the last step for me and i'm going to be one well-read mofo.
edit: Here's an article that I followed to get it setup. No fink'ing required.
