I'm getting a Tibook, and I have a 10GB ipod for Windows. Is it worth me changing it to a mac one (ie reformat and all that), or just leaving as is and using the windows machine as a sort of music library?

Assuming you can move your MP3s over to the Mac, iTunes is much better than any Windows software, especially when syncing to the iPod is concerned. So yes, I would convert it.

Were it I, I'd convert it to the Mac and see how you like it. I'm confident you will find it a better experience, but if I and others are wrong, you can convert it back using the software that came w/ it.

Or, if you're not ready to commit, oyu can keep the FAT format and still use it w/ the mac, it will just run marginally slower.

Don't believe Apple when it says you can't convert a Mac iPod to a Windows version. You can. I sold my original 5 GB (bought before win version existed) to a Windows user and bought a 10GB windows version. Reformatted the Win to work w/ mac and reformatted the 5 using the software that came w/ the windows version.

The 10 gig iPod for Windows also works on the Mac without reformatting. A friend of my little brother got a 10 gig iPod (he wanted one after he saw mine ) and he didn't have a computer for two weeks a brand new iPod. So we plugged it in, copied some songs on it and done.

iTunes is far superior to any Windows software (of the same kind, DJ apps don't count).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Cheers people! I don't really want to move all my files across to my new laptop, as though its got a 60 Gb hard drive, I can see that filling up really quickly - I have 14 Gb of mp3s with loads more being added all the time - besides without the mp3s I'd have to shoot the pc, though that would be fun - threw a broken vcr out of the window yesterday, great fun.

So do you have to do anything special to make it work with both, or just plug it into the different comps?

Just plug it in. Remember, however, that it will overwrite each time you sync w/ a different computer. You can use it as an external drive for data storage for both however.

Or you can wait a little bit and see what Apple is coming up with next. The 10GB Ipod has been end-of-lifed apparently, so something new and better is near.

Well in an ideal world I could afford to replace my ipod, but seeing as I have only just got it (august) and I have just bought a laptop - I don't think it'll be happening for quite some time yet. Unless any of you would like to help a poor medical student?

Please?

Go on?

No? Ok! What if you set it not to sync - will it still overwrite? cos I have it set to do that now, as I have 15 GB of mp3s, and only a 10 Gb ipod.

why dont your friend backup all the mp3s on the iPod to the win box then use SMB to get mac to see your win box share. that way just in case you have to reformat the ipod to work under mac.

You can convert them both ways, here's a simple How-To here: Click HERE

BTW, I'd make it Mac, iTunes + iPod = BLISS!

Ummm... no it won't, assuming you have iTunes set up correctly.

okay, I could use my winbox as an external drive. How would I do that - I can link up via firewire. Could be a problem though, as I would a have to reformat iPod (not a problem), and for music on laptop I'd have to be plugged into either ipod or winbox. Not really ideal. I mean I have a lot of hdd space, but equally have 15 GB of music (just on mp3 - about 200 cds too!)

Ideas?

I would stray far away from trying to make the iPod get some of it's music from 2 machines...it really like to have one single machine in which it gets plugged into everytime. I would personally get an external FireWire HD for my PowerBook if HD storage was a problem, and then by using a FireWire hub, connect that hard drive & the iPod & transfer the music that way...as for your massive amount of mp3s and 10GIG of iPod space, I had the same issue. I have 19.5+ GIGS of mp3s, and a 10GIG iPod, so what I did was scroll down my list of mp3s (took hours upon hours to get this done & my playlists created, but once it's done once, it only requires the occasional edit from time to time) and passed along only my very favorite songs to the iPod. Seriously, as you sort through the albums in your collection, there's a large percentage of songs that you'll say "If that was on my iPod, I'd skip right over it everytime." You have to be extremely selective, or purchase a 20GIG iPod. Of course, the newer iPod should be released sometime during this quarter, so you can always sell that one and wait for the new ones.

Uh oh...nah, it's not a 1.2.6 issue, as a matter of fact, 1.2.6 was designed to *fix* battery problems. It sounds like your actual battery may be faulty, not the software...does it do this constantly? You might wanna consider giving AppleCare a call if it does this over and over again...too, I know it doesn't say to do it, but I calibrated my iPod's battery just like my 17" PB, and it's battery life is astounding.

Nada, it should GAIN charge when plugged into a computer. There's 2 ways to charge your iPod, either plugged into your Mac, or into that wall adapter that came with it. Of course, 3rd party car adapters do the job as well, but those are your 2 options out of the box. I'd definitely take to an Apple Store if you have one nearby, or give AppleCare a call if not...ya know you actually MIGHT wanna wait til after the 28th to call, b/c you MIGHT get lucky and get your current iPod replaced w/ a new iPod that's almost promised to be released on the 28th.

hmm, how long does your hold charge for when not charging? It might just be that I haven't been charging it enough! I hope so!

I try to always charge mine to the max. I plug it into the wall via the AC adapter, hold "Play/Pause" to turn the iPod off, and a logo comes up saying "Charging". About 4 hours later it'll change into "Charged" which means it's charged to the brim. After unplugging when charged to the brim, and after calibrating the iPod's battery, I get a good 8-10 hours (depending on how often I change playlists, use the backlight, etc.) out of it before it just dies from no battery life left.
