I've a new switcher and just purchased a iMac 17" FP. After using the computer for a few days, I still feel uncomfortable about the mouse behaviour.

So far, I've tried 3 mouses - Apple mouse (come with my iMac), Microsoft Intelligent Optical mouse and a Logitec cord mouse. Among all three mouses, Apple standard mouse seems to be the smoothest one, but it's single button design make its inconvenient.

For both the MS and Logitech mouses, I found that they are slow even I set to tracking speed to the fastest. I later on have installed a software called MouseZoom - the tracking speed is ok now for "large" movement, but for those "small" or "tiny" movement, such as moving the mouse pointer for the "x" to "-" in the upper left corner of a window, still felt unsmooth - in fact, no matter how fast I set the tracking speed and MouseZoom factor is, I still felt sluggish for those "tiny" movement. When I said "sluggish", what I mean is : I need to make a "larger" mouse movement in order to make these "tiny" move on screen. On contrast, I only need to move my mouse very little under Windows to make these "tiny" moves.

To put this in other words, I can move my mouse cursor very slowly by moving my mouse very slowly gradually under Windows, but in Mac, I found that it is very difficult to make such kind of movement.

I'm not sure whether it is because of the driver, because I was still using the standard Apple mouse driver. However I've read some postings before that I can't rollback to original Apple mouse driver if I install a 3rd party one, therefore I was a bit concern to install a 3rd party mouse driver.

Any suggestion(s) ? Buy a new mouse (with higher resolution ?) ? Install 3rd party mouse driver ?

I knew that there would be a switcher out there that had an issue with this! The problem is with Windows. Windows has always used "absolute" mapping with their _mice_, this means that the way you move your mouse is directly represented by the pointer on the screen in a 1 to 1 ratio. Apple on the other hand has employed "speed ramping" which means that the speed of the pointer increases when you move the pointer rapidly and slows down to give more precice interaction at slower speeds.

If you have access to an iPod you can view this "speed ramping" in good effect; scroll through a long playlist at a slow pace. Notice how many revolutions your thumb must make to scroll one "page". Now scroll quickly and you will notice that you can scroll the whole length of a long playlist using considerably less "thumb rotations" than you would have had to use if you were scrolling slowly.

And yes, each time I used quotes I was making the quotes finger sign in the air beeotch.

Adapt. It is part of being human.

You will thank yourself for getting a Mac when you get used to it in a little while.

Here is a fun game: Try to draw something on a Windoze machine using the mouse. Now try to draw the same thing on the Mac. You will find that you will have much better controll for fine detail.

That will make no difference. He wants his Mac mouse to behave like a Windows mouse. Won't ever happen.

I would try the software drivers that came with the mice individually. Adjust the settings and see what works or not. If they don't cut it, try USB Overdrive. It's pretty popular, and let's you make custom profiles for different apps/devices. JUst make sure to uninstall drivers before trying a new driver.

Good luck.
